Lutz Violin Planes Lutz brass violin planes are patterned after the
traditional German tools used by generations of European luthiers.
These polished cast brass tools feature arched soles
(side-to-side and front-to-back) and a fine, high-carbon steel blade held
firmly in place by heavy thumbscrew cap. Available
individually, or as a set of four.
Blades require some shaping and
honing for best results.
Sizes listed indicate width of

Lutz Mini Violin Plane
Lutz brass violin planes are patterned after the traditional German
tools used by generations of European luthiers. This diminutive violin plane is handy for the finest
shaping and carving tasks involving the compound curves around the
purfling and f-holes. The polished cast brass body features an
arched sole (side-to-side and front-to-back) and a fine, high-carbon
steel blade held firmly in place by heavy thumbscrew cap.
Blade width is 5mm and the
precision cast body is 16mm long.
Blade requires some shaping and
honing for best results.

Palm Plane
This compact
flat bottom
palm plane fits comfortably in the hand making it perfect for
precision planing and detail work. Features include solid brass
construction and a high-carbon steel blade which can be honed to a
long-lasting, razor sharp edge. The very narrow gap between the
blade and the front edge of the throat opening makes it possible to
plane paper thin shavings even in hard woods.

With heavy casting this solid little brass plane

trimming and detail work. Unlike the arched bottom violin planes shown
above this tool has a flat bottom and straight, parallel sides.

I.A. Lutz Scroll
Carving Set This new set
contains an assortment of 14 gouges and chisels specially designed
for violin, viola and cello scroll carving. Short blades and palm
style handles assure maximum control when making the precise cuts
necessary for scroll work.
The laminated high carbon steel blades are
individually hand forged (you can see the forge marks and minor
irregularities left over from the process!) and are tempered to
Rc59-60 on the Rockwell scale. Lacquered Ash handles are firmly
attached to the blades using a socket style joint.
The cutting edges are factory
ground and require sharpening and honing before use. (See our
sharpening page for stones and other equipment.)
Overall tool length is 8".

long, slender blade of this knife makes it the perfect choice
for cutting bridges and f-holes. The carbon steel blade will
take and hold a very sharp edge capable of effortlessly slicing
through hard and soft woods. The handle is a 5/16" diameter x

I.A. Lutz Violin Knife
These general purpose knives are
suitable for a variety of carving and trimming operations common
to instrument makers, woodworkers and woodcarvers. The large
knife features a 12mm wide x 40mm long blade and an overall
length of 157mm. The small knife has a 6mm wide x 30mm long
blade and an overall length of 160mm. The blades are high-carbon
steel properly hardened and tempered to take and hold a very
sharp edge. The comfortable handle is figured hard maple.
Please note: These
knives come with a factory ground, generic bevel. Users should
be prepared to grind, sharpen and hone the blade to suit their
individual needs. |
